Why Do We Lie? A Conversation Worth Revisiting
Why Do We Lie? A Conversation Worth Revisiting
While driving home from work one day, Say My Name by Destiny's Child was playing on the radio. Instantly, I was taken back to a conversation I had years ago with a past partner.
We were talking about why people in relationships lie—not the little white lies, like when you ask your partner if you "look good in this outfit" and they suddenly develop expert-level acting skills to avoid World War III. You know the outfit—the one that probably should have been donated to Goodwill three years ago but, somehow, still has a front-row seat in the closet. Those are the harmless, keep-the-peace lies, and let's be honest… most of us have been there at least once.
But our conversation wasn't about those moments.
We found ourselves exploring something much deeper: Why do people choose to hide, bend, or conveniently leave out the truth? Are these moments acts of deception, or are they forms of self-protection? Is there really a difference between lying and selective storytelling?
The truth is that honesty isn't always as simple as telling the truth or hiding it. Sometimes it's rooted in fear. Sometimes it's about protecting someone we care about. Sometimes it's self-preservation. Sometimes it's habit, and sometimes the reasons are far more complicated than we'd like to admit.
Rather than offering easy answers, I'd like to invite you to continue reflecting on this topic through the companion reflection resource inspired by this post. There are no right or wrong responses—just space to consider your own experiences, beliefs, and perspectives about honesty, trust, and the stories we tell ourselves and others.
Continuing the Conversation
Honesty isn't always black and white. Sometimes the hardest part isn't deciding whether to tell the truth—it's understanding why we wanted to hide it in the first place.
If this reflection has sparked your curiosity, I invite you to continue the conversation through the companion reflection resource inspired by this post.
