Why Do We Lie?

Inspired by the blog post: Why Do We Lie? A Conversation Worth Revisiting

Before You Begin

Lying is a part of the human experience, yet the reasons behind it are rarely simple.

We may lie to protect someone we love, to shield ourselves from pain, to avoid conflict, or because we're afraid of what honesty might cost us.

This reflection isn't about deciding whether lying is right or wrong. Instead, it's an opportunity to explore the experiences, emotions, and beliefs that shape how we think about honesty.

As you move through the questions below, I invite you to answer with curiosity rather than judgment. There are no perfect responses—only an opportunity to better understand yourself and the relationships around you.

Take your time. Reflect on the questions that resonate with you, and simply notice what comes up.

Reflection Questions

1. Why do you think people lie?

What do you believe is most often behind the decision to hide or change the truth?

2.Do you think people lie for different reasons depending on their experiences, personalities, or relationships?

What influences those differences?

3.Have you ever told a lie to protect someone else's feelings?

Looking back, how do you feel about that decision today?

4. Have you ever hidden the truth to protect yourself?

What were you hoping to avoid or protect?

5. Do you believe honesty is always the best approach, or are there situations where a lie feels justified?

Why?

6. Can you think of a lie someone told you that stayed with you?

How did it shape your trust, your relationships, or the way you see yourself?

Your children don't need a perfect parent.

They need someone who continues to love, learn, grow, and show up—even on the imperfect days.

Parenting isn't about getting everything right.

It's about growing alongside the people you love.

As always… stay inspired and continue to chase purpose.
